{"id":14122,"date":"2025-08-16T11:55:27","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T11:55:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalgunowner.org\/index.php\/2025\/08\/16\/archaeology-student-from-florida-finds-rare-9th-century-gold-during-her-first-excavation-in-u-k\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T11:55:28","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T11:55:28","slug":"archaeology-student-from-florida-finds-rare-9th-century-gold-during-her-first-excavation-in-u-k","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalgunowner.org\/index.php\/2025\/08\/16\/archaeology-student-from-florida-finds-rare-9th-century-gold-during-her-first-excavation-in-u-k\/","title":{"rendered":"Archaeology student from Florida finds rare 9th-century gold during her first excavation in U.K."},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p>An American archaeology student on her first-ever dig found a rare piece of 9th-century gold.<\/p>\n<p>Yara Souza, who is from Orlando, Florida, is an international student at Newcastle University in the U.K. She was part of a July excavation in Redesdale, Northumberland, in northeastern England when she made the discovery about 90 minutes into her excavation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/press\/articles\/latest\/2025\/08\/northumberlandgold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">university announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t believe I&#8217;d found something so quickly into my first ever excavation,&#8221; Souza said in a press release. &#8220;After I&#8217;d had to miss Birdoswald last year, it was amazing to discover something that hasn&#8217;t been seen for more than a thousand years, I was really geeking out over it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Birdoswald Roman Fort is another excavation that Newcastle University students participated in last year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-large\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">Archaeology student Yara Souza holds up a piece of 9th-century gold that she discovered during her first-ever excavation in the U.K.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Portable Antiquities Scheme\/Newcastle University<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to the university, the early medieval object \u2013 about 1.5 inches long with a decorative finial at one end \u2013 was buried close to the route of Dere Street, a major Roman road which ran between York, England and Edinburgh, Scotland.
