{"id":20787,"date":"2026-02-04T00:12:48","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T00:12:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalgunowner.org\/index.php\/2026\/02\/04\/waymo-valued-at-126b-as-co-ceos-accelerate-robotaxi-expansion\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T00:12:54","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T00:12:54","slug":"waymo-valued-at-126b-as-co-ceos-accelerate-robotaxi-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalgunowner.org\/index.php\/2026\/02\/04\/waymo-valued-at-126b-as-co-ceos-accelerate-robotaxi-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Waymo Valued at $126B as Co-CEOs Accelerate Robotaxi Expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_1613560\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1613560\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1613560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tekedra Mawakana heads Waymo alongside co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov. <span class=\"media-credit\">Photo by Ian Maule\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/waymo\/\" title=\"Waymo\" class=\"company-link\">Waymo<\/a>, a leader in autonomous driving, has secured $16 billion in fresh funding, valuing the company at a whopping $126 billion\u2014nearly three times its most recent valuation of $45 billion in 2024. \u201cThis infusion of capital will ensure we are positioned to move forward with unprecedented velocity,\u201d Waymo\u2019s co-CEOs <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/person\/tekedra-mawakana\/\" title=\"Tekedra Mawakana\" class=\"company-link\">Tekedra Mawakana<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/person\/dmitri-dolgov\/\" title=\"Dmitri Dolgov\" class=\"company-link\">Dmitri Dolgov<\/a> said in a joint blog post yesterday (Feb. 2).<\/p>\n<section class=\"wp-block-observer-newsletters observer-newsletters--in-content\">\n<\/section>\n<p data-start=\"494\" data-end=\"905\">Waymo was spun out of <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/google\/\" title=\"Google\" class=\"company-link\">Google<\/a> in 2016 and now operates as a subsidiary of Google\u2019s parent company, <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" title=\"Alphabet\" class=\"company-link\">Alphabet<\/a>. Alphabet remains Waymo\u2019s \u201cmajority investor,\u201d the company said. In addition to Alphabet\u2019s \u201cstrong sustained support,\u201d the latest round was led by Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global and <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/sequoia-capital\/\" title=\"Sequoia Capital\" class=\"company-link\">Sequoia Capital<\/a>. Other participating backers include <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/andreessen-horowitz\/\" title=\"Andreessen Horowitz\" class=\"company-link\">Andreessen Horowitz<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/t-rowe-price\/\" title=\"T. Rowe Price\" class=\"company-link\">T. Rowe Price<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/kleiner-perkins-caufield-byers\/\" title=\"Kleiner Perkins\" class=\"company-link\">Kleiner Perkins<\/a> and GV.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"907\" data-end=\"1156\">Waymo is currently the only company operating robotaxis at scale on public roads in the U.S., and it\u2019s expanding rapidly. Its service is available in Austin, Phoenix, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Last month, it added a sixth city: Miami. The company currently operates more than 400,000 weekly rides across these cities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"907\" data-end=\"1156\">Waymo, which equips vehicles with specialized software, sensors and cameras, currently offers autonomous rides in electric Jaguar I-Pace SUVs. Going forward, it plans to integrate its technology into vehicles from Chinese EV brand <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/zeekr\/\" title=\"Zeekr\" class=\"company-link\">Zeekr<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/hyundai\/\" title=\"Hyundai\" class=\"company-link\">Hyundai<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/toyota\/\" title=\"Toyota\" class=\"company-link\">Toyota<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Waymo vehicles completed 15 million rides, bringing the total since inception to over 20 million. \u201cWe are no longer proving a concept; we are scaling a commercial reality,\u201d said Mawakana and Dolgov.<\/p>\n<h3>Unlocking new cities, countries and roads<\/h3>\n<p>In 2026, Waymo <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2025\/10\/tekedra-mawakana-waymos-expand-highway-airports-cities\/\" data-lasso-id=\"2901353\">plans to expand into more cities,<\/a> including Dallas, Denver, Seattle, Nashville and Washington, D.C. It\u2019s also looking to launch service in Tokyo and London. In addition, it\u2019s begun testing highway drives through employee trials across U.S. cities in a bid to eventually expand beyond surface streets and unlock new ride opportunities, such as airport trips.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond detailing Waymo\u2019s rapid expansion plan, the co-CEOs touted the company\u2019s \u201cindustry-leading safety standards.\u201d Waymo cars have led to 90 percent fewer serious injury crashes than average human drivers over their 127 million miles of autonomous operation, according to Waymo\u2019s internal data.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean Waymo\u2019s record is completely clear of safety incidents. The company has so far been involved in two fatal crashes\u2014although its vehicles were not responsible in either case\u2014and is being probed by both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board for a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-opens-probe-after-waymo-self-driving-vehicle-strikes-child-near-school-2026-01-29\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"2901354\">recent incident involving a struck child<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/01\/23\/waymo-probed-by-national-transportation-safety-board-over-illegal-school-bus-behavior\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"2901355\">pattern of Waymo cars illegally passing stopped school buses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The global robotaxi fleet is expected to surge to between <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bcg.com\/publications\/2026\/here-at-last-the-evolution-of-the-robotaxi\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"2901356\">700,000 and 3 million vehicles over the next decade<\/a>, according to an estimate by Boston Consulting Group. Robotaxis are expected to capture up to 85 percent of trips currently operated by traditional ride-hailing or taxi operations in large markets, the consulting firm projects.<\/p>\n<p>Waymo faces competition from Big Tech and startups. <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/person\/elon-musk\/\" title=\"Elon Musk\" class=\"company-link\">Elon Musk<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/tesla\/\" title=\"Tesla\" class=\"company-link\">Tesla<\/a> has branched into self-driving in recent months, launching roughly 60 human-supervised robotaxis in Austin last year. <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/amazon\/\" title=\"Amazon\" class=\"company-link\">Amazon<\/a> subsidiary <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/zoox\/\" title=\"Zoox\" class=\"company-link\">Zoox<\/a> currently operates around 50 self-driving vehicles in the U.S. The Toronto-based <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/company\/waabi\/\" title=\"Waabi\" class=\"company-link\">Waabi<\/a> recently announced plans to eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2026\/01\/waabi-raises-1b-enters-robotaxi-race\/\" data-lasso-id=\"2901357\">deploy some 25,000 robotaxis<\/a> as it expands beyond autonomous trucking.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Waymo remains at the front of the pack. \u201cThis capital underscores that the age of autonomous mobility at scale has arrived, and Waymo is leading the way,\u201d said Mawakana and Dolgov. \u201cWe have demonstrated that our technology is not just the most advanced manifestation of A.I. in the physical world, but a vital service that people have come to rely on in their daily lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/GettyImages-2192446245.jpg?quality=80&amp;w=970\" alt=\"Waymo Valued at $126B as Co-CEOs Accelerate Robotaxi Expansion\" style=\"display:none;width:0;\"\/><\/p><\/div>\n<p><script>\n\t!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s)\n\t{if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function(){n.callMethod?\n\t\tn.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments)};\n\t\tif(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0';\n\t\tn.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0;\n\t\tt.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0];\n\t\ts.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)}(window, document,'script',\n\t\t'https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/fbevents.js');\n\tfbq('init', '618909876214345');\n\tfbq('track', 'PageView');\n<\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tekedra Mawakana heads Waymo alongside co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov.
