{"id":21077,"date":"2026-02-28T12:24:56","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T12:24:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalgunowner.org\/index.php\/2026\/02\/28\/we-went-to-zohran-mamdanis-first-rental-ripoff-hearing-everyone-was-mad\/"},"modified":"2026-02-28T12:24:56","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T12:24:56","slug":"we-went-to-zohran-mamdanis-first-rental-ripoff-hearing-everyone-was-mad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalgunowner.org\/index.php\/2026\/02\/28\/we-went-to-zohran-mamdanis-first-rental-ripoff-hearing-everyone-was-mad\/","title":{"rendered":"We Went To Zohran Mamdani\u2019s First \u2018Rental Ripoff Hearing.\u2019 Everyone Was Mad."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative\" data-narration-container=\"true\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">NEW YORK \u2014 Residents lined up outside a Brooklyn high school Thursday to air their grievances about the city\u2019s landlords, inaugurating one of Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s flagship initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The event was the first of five planned \u201cRental Ripoff Hearings,\u201d which aim to \u201cuncover policy recommendations that will more effectively and systematically protect tenants in their homes.\u201d Led by Mamdani\u2019s Director of Tenant Protection Cea Weaver \u2014 who infamously claimed that \u201cHomeownership is a tool of white supremacy\u201d \u2014 said the proceeding would focus on recording violations, requesting repairs, and exposing abusive landlords.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In her presentation, titled \u201cNew Yorkers vs. Bad Landlords,\u201d Weaver told the room that the mayor\u2019s office would use the feedback collected at the rental rip off hearings to inform housing policy going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">One resident in attendance described the poor conditions of her apartment to The Daily Wire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cThe ceiling caved in,\u201d she said of the three-bedroom apartment she shared with roommates. \u201cThere\u2019s rodents and rats and we haven\u2019t had heat the last two winters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Asked why she remained in the apartment, she explained that it is rent-stabilized and that she is a comic artist who cannot afford another apartment. She said her share of the monthly rent is $300, while the total rent for the unit is $900. The average rent for a three-bedroom apartment in New York is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apartments.com\/rent-market-trends\/brooklyn-ny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">$4,841<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> a month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">But not everyone was happy with the hearing. Leftist critics <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nycha-residents-frustrated-about-rental-ripoff-hearings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">objected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> that the hearings were limited to private housing, excluding residents in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) properties \u2014 about one in 16 New Yorkers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In the middle of Thursday\u2019s session, a masked woman wearing knee-high green socks stormed the stage to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/26\/us-news\/nycha-tenants-sound-off-inhumane-conditions-ahead-of-mamdanis-first-rental-ripoff-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">criticize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> this exclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cNYCHA should be allowed in the motherf*cking building,\u201d she yelled. \u201cPoor people need a f*cking voice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Weaver and other members of the Mamdani administration let the woman interrupt the hearing for nearly two minutes before addressing the masked individual. Weaver informed the woman that NYCHA could speak to representatives just like the other New Yorkers. They then helped the woman exit the stage. As she exited, she almost took the wooden podium with her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Private landlords, too, are unsurprisingly unhappy with the hearings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cThey should pull from a combination of tenants, landlords, financiers, developers, and economists,\u201d New York real estate broker Adam Frisch told The Daily Wire, saying the hearings were too one-sided. \u201cEverybody looks at the situation with their own biases, and it\u2019s the role of the mayor to sit down with tenants and landlords and say I know you\u2019re both unhappy. Let\u2019s see what we can do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Landlords blame rent stabilization for the poor conditions of certain apartments. Without the ability to raise rent, they say, they are unable to generate sufficient revenue to maintain their buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Pinnacle Group, a major New York landlord, filed for bankruptcy in 2025, claiming that the \u201csharp increase in financing costs outpaced rental revenue, which could not be correspondingly increased due to rent stabilization.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Mamdani, who promised while campaigning to host a Rental Ripoff Hearing in each of the city\u2019s five boroughs, was not present at Thursday\u2019s event. He had spent the day in Washington, D.C., meeting in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump.
