Telling <\/span>People<\/span><\/a> magazine she\u2019s okay with not being perfect, a noticeably slimmer <\/span>63-year-old<\/span><\/a> Demi<\/span> Moore sparked <\/span>GLP-1 rumors<\/span> when she <\/span>showcased razor-sharp shoulder blades<\/span><\/a> in a backless gown at the Actor Awards this month. Days earlier, Moore stopped by the Gucci show at <\/span>Milan Fashion Week<\/span><\/a> in a leather jumpsuit, looking stick thin. \u201cShe looks like she weighs 90 pounds,\u201d <\/span>Megyn Kelly<\/span><\/a> said on her show. \u201cLike she could get blown away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Still grieving Ozzy Osbourne\u2019s death in <\/span>July<\/span>, his wife, Sharon Osbourne, and daughter Kelly Osbourne made headlines for appearing skeletal on the red carpet at the <\/span>Brit Awards<\/span><\/a> in February. Responding to backlash over her severely sunken cheeks, <\/span>Kelly said<\/span><\/a> in a since-deleted <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a> video, “To the people who keep thinking they’re being funny and mean by writing comments like ‘Are you ill’ or ‘Get off Ozempic; you don’t look right,’ my dad just died, and I’m doing the best that I can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n Even previous faces of the body acceptance movement are saying, \u201cNew bod, who dis?\u201d Singer Meghan Trainor, who broke out with the thick-gang empowerment anthem \u201c<\/span>All About That Bass<\/span><\/a>\u201d in <\/span>2014<\/span><\/a>, appears to be <\/span>half her previous size<\/span><\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve never felt better. And I look incredible,\u201d <\/span>Trainor<\/span><\/a> said of <\/span>Mounjaro<\/span><\/a>\u2019s effects. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n Comedian <\/span>Amy Schumer<\/span><\/a> confessed, \u201cI\u2019ve never been famous for being hot,\u201d before openly trying lipo and Wegovy and finally landing on <\/span>Mounjaro<\/span><\/a> as her tirzepatide of choice \u2014 with the jaw-dropping <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a> carousel to prove it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u201cI have a secret sauce,\u201d claimed \u201cThe Secret Lives of Mormon Wives\u201d star <\/span>Whitney Leavitt<\/span><\/a>, sticking herself with a syringe of semaglutide. \u201cIt\u2019s regulating my blood sugar, and just, like, killing the fat, and I\u2019m just peeing it out. At least that\u2019s how I understand it.\u201d She lost <\/span>20 pounds<\/span><\/a>. Two years later, side effects like vomiting and diarrhea forced her to ditch Ozempic in favor of counting macros. \u201cI was so sick on it,\u201d <\/span>she said<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWhen I got off of it, I gained all of that weight back, so I was like, it\u2019s just not worth it. I need to figure out something for the long haul.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s an extremely sexy promise up front: <\/span>Pop a pill<\/span><\/a> or get an <\/span>injection<\/span><\/a> and live your skinniest life. Who wouldn’t want to cash in on a trend that’s only gaining speed<\/a> as GLP-1-friendly foods<\/a>, supplements<\/a>, and sweets<\/a> flood the market?<\/span><\/p>\n Even once-in-a-generation tennis phenom Serena Williams said nah to workouts and seemingly unlimited wellness resources in favor of a <\/span>GLP-1 offered by Ro<\/span><\/a>. Notably, her husband, <\/span>Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian<\/span><\/a>, was an <\/span>early investor<\/span><\/a> in the same telehealth company Williams is now <\/span>paid to promote<\/span><\/a>. I\u2019m not saying you can\u2019t be the president of, say, <\/span>Hair Club For Men<\/span><\/a> and also be a client, but Ro\u2019s greatest marker of success might be this power couple\u2019s <\/span>$450 million<\/span><\/a> net worth, not your skinny selfie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n Then, there\u2019s Oprah, who tottered around <\/span>Paris Fashion Week<\/span><\/a> this month looking snatched as a stick. Months earlier on her podcast, she <\/span>announced<\/span><\/a>, \u201cI feel strong, I feel vibrant, and I feel more connected and alive than I have in decades,\u201d claiming to have overcome an \u201cobesogenic environment\u201d with weight-loss meds to feverish audience applause. Oprah was promoting her new book, \u201c<\/span>Enough: Your Health, Your Weight, and What It\u2019s Like to Be Free<\/span><\/a>,\u201d touting <\/span>obesity as a disease that makes you gain weight<\/span><\/a>, not the other way around. But that\u2019s not all she was selling.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n It\u2019s been a minute since Oprah shocked viewers with a wagon holding <\/span>67 pounds of fat in 1988<\/span><\/a>. She dropped the same amount of weight with the liquid diet <\/span>Optifast<\/span><\/a>. Just after the episode aired, Optifast received <\/span>200,000 viewer calls<\/span><\/a> about its product. Oprah hadn\u2019t yet linked her bank account to these types of retail juggernauts, but she wouldn\u2019t make that mistake with her next big collab.<\/span><\/p>\n In 2015, when Oprah partnered with <\/span>Weight Watchers<\/span><\/a>, she bought <\/span>6.4 million shares for a cool $43 million<\/span><\/a>. And with the phrase \u201c<\/span>I love bread,<\/span><\/a>\u201d she launched a campaign that would pay out <\/span>$221 million<\/span><\/a> when she vacated the company\u2019s board in 2024. Having revealed that she started <\/span>prescription weight-loss meds a year earlier<\/span><\/a>, she traded <\/span>point-counting<\/span><\/a> for injections, calling her newfound prescription \u201c<\/span>a gift<\/span><\/a>.\u201d It\u2019s possible that her mention of these drugs as a \u201c<\/span>lifetime thing<\/span><\/a>,\u201d hurt Weight Watchers as it <\/span>struggled to adapt to the market<\/span><\/a>, while boosting a global GLP-1 industry that\u2019s projected to hit <\/span>$133 billion<\/span><\/a> by 2030. As for how much of that goes to Oprah, only time will tell. But as fast as this <\/span>72-year-old<\/span><\/a> is shrinking, it seems <\/span>diet culture\u2019s most influential face<\/span><\/a> will do anything to make a buck.<\/span><\/p>\n Even if you resist the trend, the relentless promotion of these drugs seeps into our consciousness. <\/span>Losing weight without Ozempic<\/span><\/a> is now a flex, people alleging \u201cyou\u2019re so skinny you have to be on Ozempic\u201d is a compliment, and worrying that dropping a few pounds will have <\/span>friends thinking you\u2019re doping<\/span><\/a> is a legitimate concern. Everyone is different. For those living with <\/span>obesity or weight-related illnesses<\/span><\/a>, these drugs might be a lifesaving choice. Plus, <\/span>FDA-approved Wegovy pills<\/span><\/a> make it easier than ever to jump on the bandwagon. <\/span><\/p>\n “Truth Hurts<\/a>” singer Lizzo, famous for her marching band bangers and unapologetically skimpy costumes, slimmed down using medications like Ozempic<\/a>, while adding animal protein<\/a> into her diet. When she stopped by the “Just Trish<\/a>” podcast, host Trisha Paytas confessed to wanting to lose weight, too. “I do love the way I look, but \u2026 Maybe it’s just, like, my time, just to see how the reactions would be,” Paytas said. Lizzo replied, <\/span>“Don’t do it because everyone’s getting thin now.”<\/span><\/p>\n The devastatingly skinny \u201c<\/span>heroin chic<\/span><\/a>\u201d look of the ’80s and ’90s was criticized as a glamorization of hardcore drugs. And somehow, we\u2019re once again <\/span>normalizing drug use<\/span><\/a> as a beauty standard. The scary part is that the heroin chic era only ended because too many people were <\/span>overdosing and dying<\/span><\/a> for fashion. Hopefully that\u2019s not an omen for GLP-1s. While doctors assure us these diabetic drugs have been studied for decades<\/a>\u00a0and are safe, I wonder about the long-term effects of medically induced muscle loss<\/a>\u00a0and slowed-down metabolism<\/a> in human bodies that already naturally experience these things as we age.<\/span><\/p>\n As the jury deliberates on this matter, I often feel the FOMO, listening to friends talk shop about how they\u2019re never hungry, don\u2019t even think about drinking alcohol, and feel better than ever on GLP-1s.
