The hiring window opens on April 17 and will be capped at 8,000 applicants, the New York Times reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cBecome an air traffic controller. It\u2019s not a game. It\u2019s a career,\u201d the text of the campaign says. \u201cYou\u2019ll keep millions of people safe every day. (And make a lot of money).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"9MczWfLpBcw\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Air Traffic Control Hiring: It&#039;s Not a Game. It&#039;s a Career.\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9MczWfLpBcw?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The video blends clips of people playing video games like Fortnite with footage of busy airports, noting that average salaries can reach $155,000 after three years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cTo reach the next generation of air traffic controllers, we need to adapt,\u201d Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/10\/us\/politics\/air-traffic-controller-gamer.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Z1A.kfxQ.LtxjXYxBFWA0&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> The New York Times, adding that the campaign \u201ctaps into a growing demographic of young adults who have many of the hard skills it takes to be a successful controller.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The FAA currently has around 11,000 air traffic controllers on staff, short of its target of 14,663 positions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cWe\u2019re really going to start to see gains about two and a half to three years from now,\u201d Heather Fernuik, the executive director of the FAA\u2019s human resources office, told The Times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The hiring process can be lengthy, with certification taking up to six years, including initial screenings, a four- to six-month FAA training course, and on-the-job training.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The FAA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/sites\/faa.gov\/files\/fy25-air-traffic-controller-workforce-plan_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hired<\/a> more than 1,800 controllers in fiscal year 2024, exceeding its hiring benchmarks. The agency plans to bring on at least 8,900 new controllers through 2028 and has moved to speed up hiring by increasing starting pay and streamlining the process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Still, a shortage persists.
