Within ninety days of the hearings, the Mayor\u2019s Office of Tenant Protection, along with other agencies, will bring a joint report to Mamdani\u2019s desk showcasing common themes they learned from tenants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Mamdani\u2019s team told renters that they wanted to hear about repairs, problems with rats, problems with heat, deceptive fees from landlords, and \u201cICE-related harassment in buildings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cYour testimony will directly inform policy changes to strengthen city policies to protect tenants,\u201d an ad for the dubbed \u201cRental Ripoff\u201d series stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The Daily Wire spoke to one of the tenants offering her testimony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cI\u2019ve been living in my apartment for over ten years. We didn\u2019t have heat in the apartment most of the time for years. We had walls that were collapsing, a ceiling that\u2019s collapsing, a horrific bug and rat infestation problem,\u201d a female tenant, Abigail, said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">When asked why she remained in the apartment, she told The Daily Wire it was because it was rent stabilized. She pays $300 a month for her share of a three-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. She said the total rent for the apartment was $900 monthly, while the average rent for a three-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apartments.com\/rent-market-trends\/brooklyn-ny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">$4,892<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> a month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Abigail explained that she was a comic strip artist, so it was hard to find an affordable place to live. She hopes Mamdani keeps her rent frozen at $300 and that he mandates that her landlord fix all that is wrong with her apartment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;max-width:100%;width:100%;margin:20px auto 5px;border:0\" src=\"https:\/\/player.mux.com\/3OFKTYBhDWb01yvrfBvd5gLiWVDUpwtEW?metadata-video-content-type=embed_video&amp;metadata-video-id=e5a87763-d3f0-4616-b86a-fe2e1a5d6773&amp;metadata-video-stream-type=on-demand&amp;metadata-video-title=Rental%20Ripoff%20Interview&amp;poster=https%3A%2F%2Fdailywireplus-v2.imgix.net%2Fimages%2Fembedded-videos%2F986617c8-b7f1-466c-8c9e-fd685b8d502a.jpg&amp;autoplay=false&amp;accent-color=%23DB3D3B&amp;primary-color=%23ffffff&amp;secondary-color=%23000000\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The Rental Ripoff hearings were led by Mamdani\u2019s Director of Tenant Protection Cea Weaver \u2014 who infamously claimed that \u201cHomeownership is a tool of white supremacy.\u201d In her presentation, titled \u201cNew Yorkers vs. Bad Landlords,\u201d Weaver told renters that the mayor\u2019s office would use the feedback collected at the hearings to inform housing policy going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">New York real estate broker Adam Frisch warned The Daily Wire that the hearings are too one-sided. \u201cThey should pull from a combination of tenants, landlords, financiers, developers, and economists. Everybody looks at the situation with their own biases, and it\u2019s the role of the mayor to sit down with tenants and landlords and say I know you\u2019re both unhappy. Let\u2019s see what we can do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Landlords blame rent stabilization for the poor conditions of certain apartments.
