Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n, a close ally of President Donald Trump, conceded defeat on Sunday to opposition leader and head of the center-right Tisza party, P\u00e9ter Magyar. Orb\u00e1n, leader of the Fidesz party, has held the nation\u2019s top office for 16 years.<\/p>\n
With the votes nearly all counted by Sunday afternoon<\/a>, the Tisza Party looked poised to also deliver a two-thirds majority in parliament \u2014 which is likely to prompt a dramatic shift in Hungary\u2019s relationship with the European Union.<\/p>\n The E.U. and Orb\u00e1n have often been at odds \u2014 and Magyar has already declared his intent to work more closely with the governing body than his predecessor did.<\/p>\n \u201cHungarians said \u2018yes\u2019 to Europe,\u201d Magyar said. \u201cHungary is again going to be a very strong ally of the European Union and NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n Magyar boasted that his party had won some 3.3 million votes \u2014 the largest number for any one political party in Hungary\u2019s history: \u201cTogether we replaced the Orb\u00e1n regime, together we liberated Hungary. We took our country back.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking to a large crowd in Budapest, Magyar declared that his support was so expansive that his voters could be seen \u201cfrom the moon and every window in Hungary \u2026 Never in the history of democratic Hungary, have so many people voted, and no other party has ever received such a big mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n
