A California man who allegedly claimed to be a fictional wizard during a violent home invasion is now facing a growing list of felony charges, as new details emerged in court this week about the bizarre and dangerous incident.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors say 30-year-old Jason Thomas Nichols, who appeared in court Monday, is charged with burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism, and making criminal threats, along with an additional child-related charge stemming from a separate incident days earlier. If convicted, he could face years in prison.<\/p>\n
Judge William Pendergast significantly raised Nichols\u2019 bail from $35,000 to $250,000, citing the severity of the alleged threats and concerns for public safety.<\/p>\n
Authorities say Nichols broke into a home in Fairfield, about 45 miles from San Francisco, earlier this month while behaving erratically and insisting he was Harry Dresden, the supernatural \u201cwizard detective\u201d from the fantasy book series \u201cThe Dresden Files.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n According to prosecutors, Nichols approached the home on April 7 and began shouting through a Ring doorbell camera, demanding to be let inside. A video that quickly went viral shows him pacing, yelling, and eventually punching at the camera before ripping a doorbell fixture off the wall and attempting to force entry.<\/span><\/p>\n All the while, Nichols allegedly launched into an expletive-filled tirade, demanding to see a young girl who did not live in the home. After failing to break in through the front door, he allegedly entered through a sliding glass door at the back of the house.<\/span><\/p>\n Once inside, he reportedly continued shouting, including repeated demands for \u201cVictor,\u201d another apparent reference to the fantasy series.<\/span><\/p>\n Inside the home at the time were a pregnant woman and her 5-year-old son, who hid in the garage as the situation unfolded. The child\u2019s father, who had been watching the break-in live through security footage, rushed home and confronted Nichols, leading to the violent struggle described by police.<\/span><\/p>\n Prosecutors say Nichols threatened the family during the incident, allegedly telling them, \u201cI\u2019m going to kill you\u201d and \u201ctake you out.\u201d In doorbell footage, he said, \u201cOpen the door. Now. Or I will f*cking end you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Police praised what they described as the decisive actions of the homeowner, who rushed back to his residence and confronted the intruder, wielding nothing more than a shovel. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe homeowner\u2019s husband, who was away at the time, observed the suspect through a home security camera and immediately returned to the residence,\u201d authorities said. \u201cAs the suspect entered the home, the homeowner returned, armed himself with a shovel, and confronted Nichols.
