The Daily Wire<\/a> in September, stating his departure would be in \u201ca year or two.\u201d In a Thursday night statement, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin called Lyons \u201ca great leader of ICE\u201d and a \u201ckey player in helping the Trump administration remove murderers, rapists, pedophiles, terrorists, and gang members from American communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cHe jumpstarted an agency that had not been allowed to do its job for four years,\u201d Mullin said. \u201cThanks to his leadership, American communities are safer. We wish him luck on his next opportunity in the private sector.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lyons\u2019 last day at ICE will be May 31, Mullin said.<\/p>\n
A source familiar with his departure plans told The Daily Wire that Lyons \u201cneeds a break,\u201d but that his ultimate reason for leaving the agency was \u201cwanting to be back with his family.\u201d<\/p>\n
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson wrote on X Thursday that \u201cTodd is an American patriot who made our country safer,\u201d adding, \u201cThe American people are deeply appreciative for his service.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lyons has 20 years of service with ICE and was previously in the United States Air Force.<\/p>\n
While leading ICE, he commanded the respect of rank-and-file agents and officers. He also leaves with the respect of Trump administration officials spearheading the mass deportation campaign.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s border czar Tom Homan told Fox News that Lyons \u201chas served selflessly as a highly respected and effective acting Director of U.S. ICE.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder his leadership, ICE achieved a record number of removals in the first year of this administration, despite unprecedented challenges, delivering on the president\u2019s promise to deport illegal aliens who have no right to be in the U.S., especially those that are public safety risks or pose a threat to our national security,\u201d Homan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI commend him for a distinguished law enforcement career and the countless contributions he has made to protect our country and advance its interests,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller told Fox News that \u201cTodd is a phenomenal patriot and dedicated leader who has been at the center of President Trump\u2019s historic efforts to secure our homeland and reverse the Democrats\u2019 sinister border invasion.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHis courageous work at ICE has saved countless thousands of American lives and helped deliver safety and tranquility to millions of Americans,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
