Comey\u2019s photo showed a seashell formation \u2014 which he claimed to have stumbled across by happenstance \u2014 depicting the numbers \u201c86\u201d and \u201c47.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"GZ5aRZe7o4c\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Press Conference\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GZ5aRZe7o4c?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Critics immediately assumed that the shell formation had a sinister meaning. In the restaurant world, \u201c86\u201d generally means to take out or eliminate, and \u201c47\u201d was a presumptive reference to President Donald Trump, who is currently serving as the 47th President of the United States.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"71\">A federal grand jury in North Carolina <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.nced.227449\/gov.uscourts.nced.227449.1.0_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">returned a two-count felony indictment and an arrest warrant<\/a> against Comey: making threats to kill or harm President Trump, and sending those threats across state lines using social media.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"71\"><span class=\"transcript-snippet__content__body__word ng-star-inserted\" data-uuid=\"c3c329e2-8906-1617-bb37-7ea09eb3a837\" data-highlighted=\"false\" data-playhead=\"false\">\u201cWhile this case is unique and this indictment stands out because of the name of the defendant, his alleged conduct is the same kind of conduct that we will never tolerate and that we will always investigate and regularly prosecute,<\/span><span class=\"transcript-snippet__content__body__word ng-star-inserted\" data-uuid=\"2c2aa611-fb65-582a-47ba-d0e2e6381ecd\" data-highlighted=\"false\" data-playhead=\"false\">\u201d Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"71\">Comey, in a<a href=\"https:\/\/jamescomey.substack.com\/p\/seashells?r=16z5v&amp;utm_medium=ios&amp;triedRedirect=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> video posted on his Substack<\/a>, said he\u2019s innocent.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"71\">\u201cWell, they\u2019re back. This time about a picture of seashells on a North Carolina Beach a year ago, and this won\u2019t be the end of it, but nothing has changed with me. I\u2019m still innocent, I\u2019m still not afraid, and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary, so let\u2019s go,\u201d Comey said. \u201cBut it\u2019s really important that all of us remember this is not who we are as a country. This is not how the Department of Justice is supposed to be. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department said the case has been under investigation over the past 11 months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investigation just didn\u2019t come now. It\u2019s the result of a lot of work by law enforcement over the past year,\u201d Blanche said. \u201cI am not going to talk about the evidence that we have. That\u2019s unfair to him.
