The coating is supposed to stop a number of leaks and help to avoid more costly repairs to the monument in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The updates, according to the White House, are expected to take about one week to complete and have a price tag of $2 million \u2014 and add to the series of major renovations and updates being made by the Trump administration all around the White House and the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone is happy with the updates, however. Charles Birnbaum, former coordinator of the National Park Service\u2019s Historic Landscape Initiative, complained that the blue color made the reflecting pool look more like a swimming pool than a historical monument.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reflecting pool is hallowed ground,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/04\/28\/trumps-reflecting-pool-spruce-up-fails-charm-preservationists-00895457\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">POLITICO<\/a>. \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t resemble a swimming pool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will look far more beautiful than it did in 1922,\u201d Trump argued, adding, \u201cIt was filthy dirty, and it leaked like a sieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Department of the Interior, headed by Burgum, also championed the effort to \u201crestore and preserve America\u2019s most iconic landmarks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Reflecting Pool, according to the National Park Service, is classified as a memorial and is designed solely for viewing.
