The bill cleared both the state Assembly and Senate in late April and now heads to Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul\u2019s desk.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cWhile the use of food additives to enhance the shelf life, taste, or texture of various commercial food products is nothing new, the science behind the health effects of increased consumption of such additives is shedding new light on just how dangerous some of them can be,\u201d the bill memo says, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/06\/us-news\/new-york-could-ban-common-ingredient-found-in-pizza-and-bagels-over-health-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">per<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> The New York Post. \u201cThis legislation protects New Yorkers from three of the most pervasive and harmful food additives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">State Sen. Brian Kavanagh (D), one of the bill\u2019s sponsors, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/new-york-senate-passes-bill-to-ban-potassium-bromate-11967407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">told<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> People it addresses gaps in federal oversight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> \u201cOur federal food safety system has major gaps that expose people to unnecessary health risks when they eat food in our country,\u201d he said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cI love New York pizza in particular, but the Italians seem to be doing just fine making pizza for the last more than three decades now without potassium bromate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cThe retailers and restaurants will have plenty of time to use up their stock of flour and get alternatives,\u201d he added. The outlet noted that small businesses have three years to comply once the proposal becomes law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cThis is not gonna harm any retailer. It\u2019s not gonna harm anybody who wants a good bagel,\u201d Kavanagh added. \u201cWe don\u2019t think this is gonna have any meaningful effect on people\u2019s ability to make food they wanna make or buy food they wanna buy, and we don\u2019t think it\u2019s gonna have any meaningful effect at all on the affordability of food.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Another co-sponsor of the bipartisan bill insisted that the measure would not affect the quality of the food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cAny substance that is linked to cancer has no place in our food, period,\u201d State Sen. Cordell Cleare (D) said. \u201cOther countries have banned potassium bromate without any diminution in the quality of flour-based products and the same will happen in New York.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">If signed into law, the bill would also force companies to disclose all ingredients, including listing any that qualify as \u201cGenerally Recognized as Safe\u201d (GRAS) food ingredients.
