Actress Julianne Moore says she\u2019s about done doing movies that have any major action elements or conflict, because the world is just too scary.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 65-year-old \u201cHannibal\u201d star made the revelation during a Kering Women in Motion Talk at Cannes on Saturday, as Variety <\/span>reported<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m less and less interested in tragedy, I would say,\u201d she said while accepting Kering\u2019s Women in Motion Award. \u201cParticularly now at a time when things are rough globally, it\u2019s hard for me to invest in a story that I think is pretend, where I feel like the depth of the emotion doesn\u2019t measure up to what\u2019s happening in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like someone being murdered,\u201d Moore added. \u201cI don\u2019t like explosions and guns. I don\u2019t like histrionics. I don\u2019t like things that raise the stakes without real feeling underneath. I mean, that actually bothers me because that\u2019s like noise. I don\u2019t know how to play it. I don\u2019t want to watch it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Fans were quick to mock Moore not just for her stance, but for making her career on these exact types of films she now claims to despise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve lost count how many movies she\u2019s done with guns,\u201d one commenter wrote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFunny how artists forget their own catalog until it\u2019s time to virtue signal,\u201d another agreed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A third person wrote, \u201cThat\u2019s great! Now playback all the degenerate, violent entertainment Julianne has happily participated in throughout her career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, Moore said she is disappointed by a reported lack of representation of women in films and behind the scenes in the movie-making business and beyond, saying it\u2019s \u201cnot endemic just to the film industry, it\u2019s global.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, there\u2019s not representation in C-suites, there\u2019s not representation in media, there\u2019s not representation in higher education. There are lots of places where we don\u2019t have the representation we deserve. So I feel like it\u2019s a bigger problem,\u201d Moore said of lead roles for females reportedly dropping by to 37% in the top-grossing movies of 2025, down 10% from 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She advocated for more women telling female-centric stories in Hollywood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like, we are the ones who have each other\u2019s backs, we are the ones who hire each other, we are the ones that write stories about ourselves,\u201d Moore said at Cannes. \u201cAnd that actually goes back to point of view, too. Like, who is telling that story? Whose point of view is it? Is it a female point of view?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
