Her security detail follows as she offers me a warm smile and a big hug. I\u2019ll bet you $1,000 no one would ever peg her as an NRA board member. \u201cHiiiii!\u201d she trills. I immediately get why those who know her <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">love <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m not going to be that girl who asks when Kash is finally gonna put a ring on it (yet), or whether the relentless stream of rage-bait headlines and credible death threats freaks her out. Instead, I go with, \u201cHow does it feel to be hot enough that people think you&#8217;re a spy?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alexis laughs. \u201cI don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s ever been framed that way, and I love it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She grew up Orthodox Christian, mostly in Arkansas, raised by her Armenian mother who was a financial consultant and her father who was top brass at Gillette.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Still, some allege she\u2019s a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/kash-patel-girlfriend-alexis-wilkins-conspiracy-israel-mossad-b2945596.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mossad honeypot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d Alexis essentially rolls her eyes. \u201cMy poor mom&#8217;s digging in our basement for my baptism certificate, like, \u2018Wait, but this doesn&#8217;t make any sense.\u2019 I&#8217;m like, \u2018Mom, they don&#8217;t do common sense.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf I wasn\u2019t doing a good job, nobody would attack me,\u201d she adds. \u201cSo I will continue to do my work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alexis doesn\u2019t come off as anything close to a flash-in-the-pan opportunist. Hey, New York Times, she built a career of her own long before Kash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alexis wrote her first song when she was seven years old and recorded it in Nashville at the ripe old age of nine. \u201cI started writing when I was really young because I read an article in a Smithsonian magazine about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/fire-in-the-hole-77895126\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">coal fires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Pennsylvania,\u201d she says. (Wait, she was reading <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smithsonian <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at seven?<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was just one of those \u2018bored is not allowed\u2019 things,\u201d Alexis confirms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI asked my mom if we could donate all of our money, and she was like, \u2018No, that&#8217;s not how that works.\u2019\u201d Instead, her mother suggested she use her talents to fundraise for the cause. \u201cI went on my American Girl doll tape recorder, and I recorded a song. And I&#8217;m like, I&#8217;m gonna put it on the new iTunes thing that\u2019s out, and we&#8217;re gonna raise money with this song.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She later took on Christ-focused <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independentwomen.com\/people\/alexis-wilkins\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Belmont University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> when an activist professor gave her an F in comparative politics because he didn\u2019t jive with her conservative values. His mistake was messing with a straight-A student who doesn\u2019t take kindly to being silenced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She also describes leaving the American flag icon on her social media and continuing to work with veterans despite pressure from the music industry to tame her patriotism. Pointing to her parents and a close circle of friends, Alexis says, \u201cMy support system is really great. That&#8217;s why I started speaking up.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">About her music, tracks like \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vm8fSgu6Wgc&amp;list=RDvm8fSgu6Wgc&amp;start_radio=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A7BQayn516w&amp;list=RDA7BQayn516w&amp;start_radio=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Country Back<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d are as fire as her favorite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigsauer.com\/p365-380-rose.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sig Sauer P365-Rose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and as country as cowboy boots. The U.S Intelligence life involves constantly being on-call, but the couple unplugs when they can. \u201cWe settle into the house, see people, cook, ask, \u2018What do you want to do today?\u2019 Things that we don&#8217;t always have the luxury of doing. It&#8217;s such a blessing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Back in Nashville, a free schedule features the same emphasis on living in the moment with the people she cares about most. \u201cI would go to breakfast with my mom, and go antiquing or something \u2026 find an estate sale. I just love old things.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A curated place to call home<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Architectural Digest\u2019s \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecturaldigest.com\/video\/series\/open-door\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Open Door<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d home tour series is missing out on a brilliant gem. Alexis describes the interior of her Nashville home as \u201cold Roy Rogers,\u201d AKA the cowboy decor of any Western fan\u2019s dreams, which her mom helped her DIY.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Part of the vintage curioscape involves a mid-century RCA turn-dial TV they rigged to stream nonstop Westerns, and a gorgeous bannister they built from salvaged wood and rugged rebar. \u201cI collect old books,\u201d she explains of her museum library-like collection of secondhand treasures. \u201cI am literate, contrary to popular reporting.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But once she utters, \u201cI have a taxidermy squirrel that has a cowboy hat and a holster,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/woodlandcreekfurniture.com\/gunslinger-squirrel-whimsical-taxidermy-mount-anr-sqbandit.html?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=20086237438&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAD_a_Z1yVuMnIduE_wQkkqjsbbsUH&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw8uTQBhAdEiwAVvtJyvC0Tx-TOfxA_lYxkrx09I-MdfQWSFKI1E6gBiBN0SHu1b5wbbyyBxoCS0oQAvD_BwE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m sold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As for music? \u201cI listen to Gene Autry, like very, very, very old Western country. It&#8217;s a theme in my house.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rejuvenating in the midst of chaos<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For Alexis, the biggest difference between her public and private life is the way she\u2019s portrayed in the headlines. \u201cPeople would be surprised that I&#8217;m just not very serious,\u201d she says. \u201cI&#8217;m just kind of a normal person \u2026 God forbid.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She can often be found reading over policies, researching, and even teaching herself to code, so zoning out with a little beauty routine is her favorite way to unwind: \u201csitting in front of my red light, on my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/higherdose.com\/products\/higherdose-infrared-pemf-on-the-go-mat?variant=42731166498987\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PEMF [pulsed electromagnetic field] mat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on the grounding setting, watching reality TV.\u201d When we talked, she had just finished part one of the \u201cSummer House\u201d reunion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also a fan of Pilates, light strength training, and a peaceful walk outdoors, she wants to form a regular hobby that doesn\u2019t involve a screen. Still, we\u2019re both low-key looking forward to \u201cLove Is Blind\u201d Season 11 this fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cooking up a family connection<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keeping it simple in the kitchen, Alexis preps basics like chicken cutlets and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodles.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOoq2xGaj7J-5ctFvNc5uSwlkqO9vZTvqx-eA7V1IyPOWi6ayampi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Goodles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> mac and cheese for herself. \u201cI am such a boring eater,\u201d she jokes. \u201cI&#8217;m making chicken Caesar wraps all the time.\u201d But when Kash hits the jackpot during hunting season, she says, \u201cWe have a lot of wild game to work with. I&#8217;ve been cooking stuffed peppers with elk recently.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Always down to learn something new, she also enjoys discovering a few tricks of the trade from the Gujarati Indian side of the family. \u201c[Kash\u2019s] mom teaches me how to cook,\u201d she says, noting how the same dish might be seasoned differently depending on a family\u2019s preference. \u201cI&#8217;m in the kitchen with her, I&#8217;m asking her questions, I&#8217;m taking pictures of how much spice she uses. But first things first, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what the heck was that jacket?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou&#8217;re the first person to ask me that,\u201d she smiles. \u201cFun fact. It&#8217;s actually a men\u2019s jacket: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.filson.com\/products\/mackinaw-wool-cruiser-jacket-red-black-plaid-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Filson Mackinaw<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> wool plaid jacket, black and red.\u201d She later bought one for Kash as an inside joke. Alexis proudly maintains \u201cboring,\u201d \u201cstraight-laced\u201d professional boundaries, so it took a minute before she accepted an invitation to dinner at E3 Chophouse in Nashville with the then-adviser to Donald Trump. But this serendipitous connection almost didn\u2019t happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI wasn&#8217;t gonna go to that party because I had lost my dog like 10 days before,\u201d she recalls. Deep in grief over her 16-year-old Bichon Frise, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CjKKj29OmDN\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bizou<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Alexis reluctantly took her mom\u2019s advice \u2026 sort of. \u201cMy mom literally kicked me out. She was like, \u2018You have to get out of the house.\u2019 I was like, I&#8217;m just wearing jeans. The joke is I wasn&#8217;t dressed up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kash has <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QJZz4hI-KZE?t=696\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">spoken<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> publicly about an imminent proposal, but the dedicated couple remains intentional as they navigate uncharted territory. \u201cWe had no idea, obviously, what challenges lay in store for us,\u201d Alexis says. \u201cBut everything is an adventure. I&#8217;m so proud of him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Advice for the next generation<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Alexis offers front-line wisdom for those just beginning to find their voice. \u201cI think that being who you are does turn into a superpower,\u201d she says. Stepping out confident in your values requires some guts, but she confirms, \u201cIt&#8217;s the same thing as someone saying you have to go to these parties in high school and do drugs to be cool. We all look at that like, \u2018Oh, that&#8217;s peer pressure.\u2019 You don&#8217;t have to be in rooms that you don&#8217;t want to be in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This high-value apple hasn\u2019t fallen far from the tree. She says her grandpa \u2014 a first-generation Armenian who worked in an ice cream factory, sold newspapers, shined shoes at age five, and went on to become an aerospace engineer \u2014 often quoted historian Thomas Babington Macaulay: \u201cThe measure of a man\u2019s real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom always said don&#8217;t settle,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>I tell her to waitlist me for a \u201cMossad honeypot\u201d tee if she ever launches a line of satirical merch. But before we part ways, I invite her to share what most often occupies her thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I making a good impact, and am I showing up for my friends and family, and am I being myself in all of this noise?\u201d she says. \u201cIs God proud of me? Is my mom proud of me?
