A graduate of Yale, Wojcicki worked as a healthcare analyst on Wall Street for four years before moving into healthcare research. Another major success came later that year, when 23andMe partnered with GlaxoSmithKline, granting the pharmaceutical giant access to genetic data from 5 million customers for drug development. GlaxoSmithKline initially invested $300 million, extending the collaboration in January 2022 with an additional $50 million. By design, the at-home test was a product that no consumer should need to purchase more than once. Ancestry testing is a one-and-done experience. The limited revenue model and rising customer acquisition costs challenged the company’s long-term profitability prospects, and 23andMe never returned to its 2021 valuation of $6 billion.
