Vortex just gave fans of the Defender series a little more to choose from. The Defender-CCW, Defender-ST, and Defender-XL already\u00a0made their rounds on pistols, carbines, and competition guns across the country over the past year. But now, all three optics are available in a\u00a0green 3 MOA dot. This gives shooters another way to fine-tune their sight picture to their environment, or just to their eyes.<\/p>\n

Green vs. Red: What\u2019s the Difference?<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019ve ever had trouble picking up a red dot quickly on a bright sunny day, it might be worth trying green. Green light is supposedly more visible to the human eye in daylight,\u00a0potentially making\u00a0the dot easier to spot. It also\u00a0tends to stand out better against red clay, sand, and other arid environments. For shooters with astigmatism, green can also offer a cleaner, more defined aiming point where red might look blurry or starburst-like. However, for my eyes, green and red look the same. I think it makes the most sense for people in desert environments with a lot of red rock. Red may be better for greener climates.<\/p>\n

Defender-XL: Bigger Window, Faster Transitions<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Defender-XL\u00a0was made for competition. Its oversized window gives you a massive field of view for tracking targets across a stage and speeding up those follow-up shots. The\u00a0Defender-ST\u00a0is your general-purpose workhorse. It\u2019s been riding shotguns, handguns, and offset carbine mounts since it launched.\u00a0With the same core features as the XL; ShockShield\u00a0insert, DeltaPoint Pro footprint, 25,000-hour runtime, and\u00a0motion activation, the ST\u00a0just\u00a0comes with a smaller footprint and slightly more compact build.<\/p>\n

Defender-CCW: Better Optics, Smaller Package<\/h2>\n

For everyday carry, the\u00a0Defender-CCW\u00a0delivers a tight footprint with a relatively large viewing window. One of the most noticeable upgrades in the green version is that\u00a0Vortex has improved the refresh rate,\u00a0completely eliminating the pulsing effect that some users noticed in earlier batches. Now, the dot stays stable and clean even during fast movement or recoil.<\/p>\n
